Hello learners!
Welcome to the 19th day of the series 30 Days of PM Interview by Crework! Yesterday, we discussed the second exercise question for metrics and analytics. Today, we will practice one more.
But before we start, make sure you are subscribed to us. In case you are not, subscribe to us right now and complete the challenge.
Choose a Metric ✨
Your practice question for today is:
Imagine you're a PM at LinkedIn and it's 2018. You're about to launch LinkedIn Live Video. How would you determine success? (Asked at LinkedIn interview)
Now, before we move on to “how should we approach it” part, I want you to try it. Come on, pause here for a while, bring a notebook and pen and try this question.

Okay, now let’s talk about how we can approach this.
Step 1: Ask Clarifying Questions
What is LinkedIn trying to achieve with LinkedIn Live video?
What are we launching as an MVP for this feature?
By “determining success”, do you mean that we have to define the success criteria in absolute numbers?
Should I define the success criteria only or should I also come up with all key metrics?
For this question, I am assuming that LinkedIn wants to move away from being just a job searching platform and become a content creation platform. We are supposed to define the metrics we will user to measure feature success.
For MVP, we are launching a feature for people to schedule lives, conduct lives. All the followers will be notified when a LinkedIn live will happen and any LinkedIn user can join in using the live link.
Step 2: Understand the Objectives and Goals
Let’s try to understand the goals of LinkedIn.
LinkedIn’s mission is to connect the world's professionals to make them more productive and successful.
How does LinkedIn make money?
Through ads revenue
Through LinkedIn premium membership
Who are the user?
Working professionals looking for a job or wanting to connect with other professionals.
Recruiters who want to hire talent from the platform.
What does LinkedIn want from the feature?
More engagement from the users
More users to create content
More users to build audience on the platform and engage with them
Step 3: Let’s come up with the metrics
North Star Metric - This is the most important metric for any product that tells if the product is doing well or not.
For LinkedIn Live feature, the north star metric would be - Number of live sessions per month
L1 Metrics - These are the metrics that either directly contribute to the NSM or act as a check to make sure the product is growing in a healthy direction.
For this feature, L1 metrics would be:
Total number of live session per user per month
Total number of attendees per live session
#users who do a live session/ #users who post on LinkedIn
This was an example of how you can approach a metrics question asked in a PM interview. There can be multiple ways of approaching the same problem, and there is no “right” answer. The interviewer wants to assess your ability to think and come up with a solution. The real answer is the process you use to come up with your solution.
I would love to see the solution you came up with. Please share it with us on twitter or reply to this mail.
